Reading a glaze

Glaze chemistry reacts to thickness, to where a pot sat in the kiln and to how fast it cooled. We fire in small loads and accept the variation rather than sorting it out.

01 — Break

Where the glaze thins over an edge the clay shows through. That line is the throw.

02 — Pool

Glaze gathers in the low points and reads darker. No two pots pool the same.

03 — Foot

The unglazed ring is where it stood in the kiln. It should be smooth, never sharp.

Set the table with something thrown by hand.
